Balancing studies and work is always a challenging task that most students struggle doing. When Sam Congdon chose to work at Student Work Painting, he had to deal with balancing his schoolwork and his management job. This is because, though the actual work of painting was to be done during summer, there are some duties that he had to do before then such as marketing and hiring his team members. He had to make sure that everything was in order for the summer painting. He also had the task of proving to his fellow students that he could do it.
From the first day that the job starts in summer, the manager has to make sure that the painting crews are trained and they know how to finish jobs on time. This means that a manager spends time during the day travelling from one crew to another ensuring they are on the task, within budget and they have adequate painting supplies. At night, the manager has the tasks of preparing estimates for the homeowners in need of paint jobs and calling back customers with pending contracts. The job is therefore demanding and it has to start early and end late.
The first summer was grueling for Sam Congdon because on top of doing all that, he also had to commute to Battle Creek from Hillsdale, a journey that took an hour one way. It was an exhausting summer such that at times he felt like giving up. Some days went well while others were bad. However, on all that, he learnt valuable lessons that he uses to this day. He learnt how to run a business, how to sell and how to interact with homeowners. He learnt how to be responsible and to manage people. To top it up, he made more money than his fellow students in the college did. The experience he got was so valuable to him such that if given a chance, he would not change it. It taught him how to run a business and how to work for himself and become a full time entrepreneur.
Most of the jobs that the Student Work Painting Company had were for painting residential homes. However, Sam Congdon landed painting for commercial facilities such as a hotel and a factory. At one instance, they painted an auto parts store with stripes. The experience was a huge bonus and of great help. Interacting with homeowners and other business managers provided him with invaluable experience and good lessons that he uses even today.
Sam Congdon took part in managing in the Student Work Painting Company for two more years in the Battle Creek city. Those years were much easier due to the experience that he had attained and because he lived in the same city that he was working. This meant that there was no need for commuting for two hours daily, a fact that left him with some free time for enjoyment. During his free time, he took part in jogging and rollerblading as well as taking time to go home to Washington State for vacation.by
